This report is an analysis on the emergence of the use of the Internet for business, i.e., Internet e-Commerce, with emphasis on the impact this technological change has on organisations and industries in general, and the associated support systems including information systems.

The impact of the value of Internet e-Commerce to existing business including reference to Porter’s generic value chain model is demonstrated within this report.

Porter’s model consists of five primary (inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales and service) and four support (firm infrastructure, human resource management, technology development and procurement) activities that relate to the working infrastructure of a company towards an outcome of a healthier profit margin.

The assessment of the impact of new technology is based upon organisations and industry in general.

This report is broken down into the following areas of discussion:

A background consisting of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Internet e-Commerce, the current state of development, including the adoption and maturity of EDI. Followed by future development and directions.
